Let's be fair: yes, the Civil War was about slavery. That's undebatable. And yes, post-war use of the Confederate Flag was incentivized by racists, to remind people that they lived in a racist place. That being said, the symbol has come to represent the South as a whole. Some people like the flag even without being bigots, because they feel it's something that represents their identity. Does that mean they are ignorant about its history? Absolutely. But there's no ill intent. The real problem lies with those that wave the flag not because they associate it with the South, but because they're bigots. Distinguishing the two is very important.

The reason they keep that flag and honour it, is because they made the same claim against the US state that the declaration of independence did against the British state: That of tyranny. They see it as a fight for their freedom. The best way to use this flag now (imo, note that I don't know that much US history) is against government intervention into things it has no reason to intervene in.

Since you requested to be enlightened: 1- A Symbol can mean different things to different people. Just because you perceive it to be racist ... doesn't mean that it IS racist. Conversely just because a good ol boy believes it represents his heritage ... doesn't mean that's ALL it represents. 2 - FREEDOM ... US of A is the land of the free. We're going to continue to allow people to say stupid things (like your whole post) and promote stupid ideas and fly silly flags. This is part of the Diversity that makes America so great *wink*wink*

Depends what you mean by confederate flag. I assume you mean “The Battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia”. This flag was tied to Beauregard and Lee and the successes of the confederacy against northern invasions of the south. The flag never stood for the confederacy as a whole though it is associated.for many southerners it stands for fighting against overwhelming odds and prevailing. Also it is tied to the “southern gentleman” and the legend that is Lee and the culture of the south. A lot of people don’t associate it with racism or slavery just with fighting and perseverance against oppressors.

You won't find a single flag on earth that wasn't used at least once as an icon for extremist and violent people. What is really hypocrital about the confederate flag is that the plain old american flag is an even worse symbol as it represents a century of war and military bases all arround the world. This is not about true morals, it's about a group of americans making racism a taboo of religious proportions.

A symbol you choose to wear means what you want to express. The ones who will try to tell you otherwise are perverts. People don't know their history and claim their ignorance validates their preconceived notions. The flag you're referring to is the battle flag. It was specifically used in battle (Because the confederate flag and the union flag looked similar and were hard to tell apart on the battlefield). It became popular in the Reconstruction Era by those who resisted the national government's tyranny disguised as "help". The pretense of the United States was that participation was voluntary. That makes the union the traitors, not the confederates. They just happened to win. Mostly thanks to Abe Lincoln's time machine which allowed him to start a war over a proclamation he wouldn't make until 2 years later.

You can argue day and night what the civil war was about. Confederate soldiers didn’t die for slavery though they died for states rights. The people who could afford slaves could afford to buy there way out of the war (if you paid 300$, a lot at the time, you didn’t have to fight) confederate soldiers were told they’d fight and died because they didn’t want a federal government they wanted a confederacy. It’s the exact same debate as goes on today in Europe. And if America had lost our revolution I’d fly an American flag.

That flag that most people call the confederate flag, was, in fact, the flag of the Virginia 1st battalion, the "fighting Irish" made up almost entirely of Irish immigrants, at a time when the irish were considered to be less than dirt, they became the most decorated unit in the civil war, doing for Irish Americans what the Tuskeegee airmen did for black Americans, solidifying their place in history, and cementing them as men of substance. Say what you will about that flag, it certainly has been used by some less than scrupulous people, but what that flag really meant, what it really stood for, was diversity, and honor, overcoming adversity, and earning your place.
