When Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and the "Corp of Discovery" left St. Louis, Missouri, on May 21, 1804, their mission was to explore the vast, unknown territory acquired a year earlier in the Louisiana Purchase. The travelers hoped to find a waterway that crossed the western half of the United States. They didn't. However, young readers will love this true-life adventure tale of the two-year journey that finally brought the explorers to the Pacific Ocean.

So Interesting and Informative!

"The Lewis and Clark Expedition changed the face of the American West forever." When Thomas Jefferson selected Meriwether Lewis and William Clark as co-captains of an epic western expedition, his intention was to find a waterway to the Pacific Ocean. For two years Lewis and Clark, eventually aided by Sacagawea and her husband Charbonneau, traversed rugged territories by land and water, stopping only to make winter camps in the harshest of conditions. When the explorers returned to St. Louis in 1806, they shared a plethora of information ranging from maps and Indian tribes, to unknown plants and animals. Their copious notes and drawings are invaluable to this day.

Wonderful Series for Kids Interested in History!

My 7-year-old grandson was studying the Lewis and Clark Expedition in school and asked me to find out if there was a book about them in this series. I have bought him 7 or 8 others, and being a history buff, he has loved them all! When this one arrived, he unwrapped it and immediately began to read it out loud to me. We both learned a lot we did not know about these two men.

Good American history intro

Great little books for kids - not sturdy but worth the price for the info - not sure if some of the others are straight forward facts or have a political slant but kids need to know this history and these little books are a great way to start -

Fantastic for home schooling!!!

Purchased these for my niece and nephew for their home schooling. Their family is traveling cross-country in their RV to see the journey of the Lewis Clark Expedition this year.

Informative and Enjoyable!

I really enjoy these who was books and that they are written for my son's reading level. I prefer the content of some other books over these, but these are perfect for your middle grade reader! I always learn something new from these, too! I will buy again!

Any book in this series is perfect for a kid who loves learning.

My grandson is really into history and social studies, so this whole series of books are perfect for him! Easy to read, but not infantile.

A Very Good Book and a Great Series of Books for Young Children!

A very well written and comprehensive accounting of the Lewis and Clark Expedition available in a condensed format for children. I purchased this book for my grandson and was impressed with how much detail was presented in this abbreviated version as compared to the book, "The Journals of Lewis and Clark" edited by Bernard DeVoto, a condensation of the Lewis and Clark journals that I had read this past summer. I look forward to giving more of the books in this 'What Was, Who Was' series to all my grandchildren.

Love the book!

I love all these "what was" and "who was" books. They are extremely well-written and interesting for young kids (elementary age.) My son did a report about Lewis and Clark and got all his information from this book. He had plenty of info and was able to easily write his report.

Five Stars

These are the best books ever for kids....and I learn a lot too.

Great Book!

Very informative book! Kids learn a lot from these Who was, Where was or is, and What is or was books.
