Yes, there is a specific cause of death (after all something killed or kickstarted the whatever thing killed the guy), but there is no single thing that kills you of old age, there are a few known things that contribure to it, DNA degeneration, either in the telomeres or random insertions or cutouts in DNA, being the one of special interest in the last few years, but is not the only thing that promotes the ageing process. And the manifestation of these is not Always linear, development depending with your own DNA, lifestyle and experiences (look for epigenetics). In short anything that a young adult could recover from or survive and didn't, or anything related to the progressive decayment of the organs and systems in the person is declared death from old age.

When any cell duplicates, it has to copy the DNA of the mother. In that process called mitosis, DNA transform into RNA and the cell splits into 2 new cells. This new cells have to transform RNA into DNA again, and here is the problem and the reason of age, cells cant copy the DNA without mistakes, they lose some parts of the chain and you get older. When you are old, this mistakes can take several diseases and turn into your death process. Furthermore, cells can suicide if they are in contact with dying cells, making a necrotic chain reaction.

I had read (no source, sorry) that some form of complication or illness is always what causes death. You may be debilitated by old age, but you don't literally die from it.

Usually it's "complications due to old age". Cells break down eventually which causes the body to become very weak and vulnerable or some organs just say no. The same thing kinda applies to AIDS. The HIV virus does most of the work, all it takes is a cold or something to do the rest.
